A heavyweight in size, GREAT in precision
We recently ground a large machine bed for a customer in Germany, which is used in a milling and turning grinding machine for the production of wind turbine components. The workpiece consisted of two parts weighing 17 and 21 tonnes and had overall dimensions of 2,000 x 12,000 millimetres.

Project information
The machine bed consists of two separate sections, each approximately six metres long. After grinding, these sections are assembled to form a single complete machine bed. A key requirement here is that both sections have exactly the same dimensions and flatness.
For this project, the guideways on the machine bed were ground. These guideways are a key component of the machine, as they ensure the precise guidance of the machine parts during the production process.
Due to its large dimensions and heavy weight, a precise approach was essential. Any deviation could affect the operation and accuracy of the entire machine.
The challenge
Due to the length and weight of the product, it was not possible to grind both parts in a single clamping operation. The two parts were therefore machined separately.
The challenge here was to ensure that both parts were ultimately exactly the same. Once assembled, the two parts must form a single unit, without any differences in height or deviations in the articulation paths.
This requires a combination of the right machine capacity, a controlled grinding process and the expertise of our skilled craftsmen. During machining, the dimensions and results are carefully monitored to achieve the desired end result.
Machining on the Danobat 8-metre machine
Our Danobat 8-metre surface grinder was used for this project. This machine is the only one within our capacity that can handle this combination of dimensions and weight.
The Danobat also features a main and auxiliary spindle, enabling large workpieces to be machined accurately and efficiently. This makes the machine ideally suited to the grinding of large machine components where high standards of flatness and dimensional accuracy are required.
Thanks to this machine capacity, we are also able to machine heavy workpieces weighing several tonnes with the required precision.
Applications in the wind industry
The machine bed is used in a milling and turning-grinding machine that produces components for wind turbines. In the wind industry, precision and reliability are key factors. Production machines must be able to operate for many years under demanding conditions.
A precision-ground machine bed forms the basis for a stable production process and consistent quality of the parts produced.
Lead time
Despite the scale of the project, the entire machining process was completed in around 2.5 weeks. During this period, the workpieces were prepared, ground, inspected and made ready for delivery to the customer.
Thanks to the combination of our machine capacity, short lines of communication and experienced staff, we are able to carry out even large and complex grinding projects efficiently.
GREAT in precision
This project demonstrates what De Rooy does best: the precision machining of large and heavy workpieces. Using state-of-the-art grinding machines and specialist expertise, we deliver solutions for a wide range of industries.
Even with complex, large-scale projects, quality and precision remain our top priorities. This means we are not only BIG in scale, but above all BIG in precision.
